Top 5 Vegetarian restaurants in Calgary

In Calgary, where restaurants are known for their steak, it's tough to find good dining places that serve vegetarian food exclusively. Here's my list of favourite five that cater to vegetarian population.

1. The Coup and Meet (Restaurant and Lounge) is a trendy place on 17th Avenue serving local and organic produce. However, its always so busy. The wait to get in the restaurant can be really long and unfortunately they don't take reservations. While you wait to get in the restaurant, have a drink or two at their lounge called 'The Meet.'

2. White Oak restaurant in the south east part of Calgary offers Vietnamese vegan cuisine. There meatless ribs are worth trying.

3. Located in the heart of Kensington area, 'Gratitude Cafe' is known for serving vegan, raw and gluten free food. They serve raw food every Friday night, vegan food on Saturday nights and sweet and savory vegan brunch.

4. Veggie House located on 109, 303 Centre Street SW, Calgary, has an extensive food menu with over 100 dishes but it's a food court style restaurant. If you get confused after seeing so many items on the menu, simply order ginger fried rice which are delicious.

5. Buddha's Veggie Restaurant use to serve only textured vegetarian protein in their dishes but now they also have a meat menu. The good thing is that they use separate oil and deep fryer to cook vegetarian food so if you are craving unique fusion cuisine with peking, szechuan or thai flavours, try Buddha's Veggie.

Escape to Two Jack Lake

Last weekend we got away to Two Jack Lake for camping for a couple of days. It was definitely a great experience. We got ample opportunities to view wildlife (deer and bighorn sheep to be precise), went hiking, tried canoeing and just chilled by floating in the lake and soaking in the picturesque beauty of the surrounding area. Two Jack Lake, Alberta is only a kilometer away from Lake Minnewanka, Alberta and not as busy so perfect for a weekend escape from busy Calgary city life.

Two Jack Lake campgrounds are about 1.5 hrs from Calgary (about 130 kms) and 10 mins from Banff (about 12 kms), along the Minnewanka loop. The main campground has: a lot of secluded campsites, kitchen shelters and no flush toilets. You can find flush toilets and heated showers at Two Jack Lakeside campground which is directly across the road from the main campground. Now, if you are not in the mood for camping then Two Jack Lake is great for day picnics and BBQ get togethers too.

Afrikadey 2010

Afrikadey 2010.png

Imagine, a week long of celebrations that showcase the rich creative works of African cultures right here in the heart of Calgary. Sounds Interesting? Well, join fellow Calgarians this August to experience all that Africa has to offer during Afrikadey 2010 which is scheduled from August 9th to 14th 2010.

Afrikadey 2010 festivities will begin with Opening Gala on August 9th at REPUBLiK (219 17 Ave. SW) from 7pm to 9:30pm. It will include dance, music, fashion and African appetizers. Although the festival includes various tasteful events (like pop quiz and dance workshop) throughout the week at different venues, one event you wouldn't want to miss is celebrations at Prince's Island Park on August 14th, 2010 starting 10.30 am.

Besides experiencing African inspired sights, sounds and flavours in the park, you can also enjoy the beer gardens, take your kids to the children's area for making K'Naan-inspired waving flag, indulge in eating curried goat, jerk chicken, Colombian BBQ, or ice cream or buying African art and wares.
